We always planned to lessons, but could never afford to. Now we possibly could but both mine just don't want to and well, you know how clingy mine get. I'm just not sure they'd actually do it. Actually I know M won't, A says she wouldn't.

But so far, with limited time in the pool they've both managed ok, but then there are only 2 of mine so I can understand how much more of a logistical nightmare 4 is!

I never managed effective swimming with two children to one adult despite a few tries, it only ever worked when A was with us and we had a one adult to one child ratio and even then I don't think any swimming was learnt, just water confidence. The swimming lessons have made a massive difference for us and I would now happily take D and S swimming on my own. Which is probably not remotely constructive or helpful as a comment but just wanted to say swimming generally does seem to be a faff!

Michelle - do I need to change my writing style before you go blue or is holding your breath good for you?

Helen - I agree, and I'm missing our Wednesdays :( but the drama is good too. Need to plan next term perhaps...

Sarah - http://www.canada.com/topics/lifestyle/food/story.html?id=cbfba4c6-e4fc-4533-973c-57ae0b27b1f7&k=18941&p=2

Em - I can't find the link now, but whilst researching I found more info about the Eco Kettle than is on that site, including things like how insulated it is, so that you don't need to reboil if you leave it for a few minutes. It's also able to boil relatively small amounts (and the valve bit lets you measure those fairly exactly) whereas the cheapie Tesco one can't do less than half a litre! I had the same thought about discarding water, but I suspect that for us it wouldn't matter much because we would only fill the reservoir first thing in the morning or if we knew we were likely to use it, since we're already in the habit of boiling only what we need. Tbh, we're looking not only at the kettle itself, but also at the ethics of the company producing it. Shame they're partially made in China rather than fully UK produced, but you can't have everything!

The swimming sounds like a dilemma - my lot have always had lessons even when it's been difficult to afford them/get to them because I guess I considered it a life saving skill which could be really important one day.

Plus I married Steve, who is so bad at swimming that he is practically water phobic, so firstly he would never come swimming with me when the children were tiny, and also I hate to see what the lack of confidence has done to him, which makes me all the more determined that my kids will enjoy swimming. (then again we have created yet another dilemma where 4/5 of the family now enjoy water based activities and 1/5 really hates them, but that's another issue ...)

It has been a very hard slog, but worthwhile I think. The girls have always enjoyed it but Josiah has been an utter nightmare at times - but they took part in a gala last week and he was the one who won a medal!

And yeah, I think you should have stood up to the poolside staff about the pool sling. I can't see any good reason why you shouldn't be allowed to use it.

oops sorry for taking over your blog!! really I came here to ask for the parsnip cake recipe!

can I ask a question about the eco kettle...how is it different to only putting a cups worth of water in a normal kettle? in fact it would surely waste more water as it says "To ensure the water in your ECO Kettle does not get stale, start each day by discarding any remaining water and refilling with fresh." therefore if you overfill it, even if you don't boil too much, you're wasting water. I was trying to find out the power of it, but couldn't see it listed on the website - it says it boils fast, so I'm assuming it is just as powerful as your cheap from tescos kettle, so would use the same electricity to boil a cup of water.

Maybe I missed something though......
